Learning Proper Breathing with Pilates

Breathing is essential to life. We all do it and understand its importance, but we often don’t do it properly. Pilates helps you learn to breathe properly and enjoy the benefits of doing so.

Everyone who lives breathes. It is imperative for us to do so in order to exist. When we are stressed, though, we tend to hold our breaths. We also hold our breaths often when we exercise or carry a heavy load. When you hold your breath, you could create imbalances, create pain, and work opposing muscles. When you breathe deeply in through your nose and out through the mouth, your body receives more oxygen, helping you throughout your day. One way to think about it is that shallow breathing limits your range of motion. It is always best to breath to your full capacity instead.

One of the main benefits of proper breathing is relaxation. When you don’t breathe properly, your efforts become more difficult, causing poor posture and imbalances. Pilates trains you to breathe properly so you can de-stress and handle the mental and physical stresses of life better.

When you breathe based on the philosophies of Pilates, you inhale deeply through your nose then exhale through your mouth. This allows you to have proper form and promotes abdominal engagement and correct spinal alignment. There are many other breathing practices and theories you can use alongside Pilates to help engage and stabilize your body. When you exhale, your rib cage closes and your spine flexes slightly. The opposite happens when you exhale. Breathing properly helps to build up your back muscles with every breath. Exhaling through your mouth also helps your body relax.

Breathing is essential to life. Give Pilates breathing to see what it can do for you. You may find yourself more relaxed and enjoying a better posture just by breathing correctly. You have nothing to lose and lots to gain in trying.
